Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world. It is in the northeast region of Nepal and is a neighbor of Mount Everest, located just 14 miles east of it. Its size alone is impressive, and its structure, that of a perfect pyramid with four projecting edges, makes this mountain all the more spectacular.
Road to the top: The normal Makalu route in Nepal is one of the classic routes and a difficult undertaking in the Himalayas. Traced for the first time by a French team in 1955, the route is accessible via the Barun valley, at the base camp. The route consists of difficult and exposed terrain. The key to a successful ascent of Mount Makalu is patience, a good organization of logistics and perseverance.
The base camp route climbs through moderate slopes to Camp 1 at 6400m. After sleeping in this camp we return to the base camp to start planning for the next climb to the upper camps. We return to Camp 1, then climb a steep wall directly to Camp 2 at an altitude of 6600m, near Makalu La. After sleeping at Camp 2, we go to Camp 3 to acclimatize before returning at base camp. Our last foray into the mountains brings us to Camp 4 at approximately 7,600m.
The day of the summit, we climb from Camp 4 through mixed terrain of the French Corridor. The corridor consists of rock and mixed ice protected by fixed ropes. We continue to the summit ridge which is a narrow exposed climb on an incredible ridge. We climb to the false summit and then reach one of the most famous of all the peaks, the Makalu.
The preparation of all necessary permits, food, materials, equipment, cooking, staff, cook, transport and climbing sherpas (one for each client) will be done before leaving for Makalu. Our team will ensure the security and success of this climb (for more details, contact us: panoramatreks@gmail.com ).
