Kanchenjunga (8586 m) is the third highest mountain in the world, as the queen of the Great Himalayas stands on the Nepal- Sikkim border high above rhododendrons and large forests with rivers pouring from its sides. Nepal opened the Kanchenjunga region to trekkers in 1988, though people have trekked in the area in connection with mountaineering expeditions since the turn of the century.

Comparatively the region is a long way from Kathmandu and the nearest airport and roads are a long way from the mountain. As per the rule of Nepal Government there should be at least two trekkers in a group to trek at a time. On the trip you will be able to study the culture and lifestyle of Sherpa, Tibetan, Rai and Limbu communities.

Your trekking route is drained by Tamur River that meets Arun below Mulghat. Numerous glaciers feed the river. The glaciers north of the main peak are clockwise Nupchu, Lhonak, Chichima, Gimsung, Pyramid, Kanchenjunga and Ramtang. West and South of the main peak are Kumbhakarna (Jannu), Yamatari and Yalung glaciers. Kangbachenga (4038) in Ghunsa valley and Walungchung (3,200m) in Tamur valley are the highest settlements in the area. The latter was an important trading centre between the towns of Darjeeling and Tipta La in Tibet. The only access to the Kanchenjunga area is a road link to Basantapur and a direct air link to the town of Taplejung bazaar.
